Day of Radiology

It's undeniable that radiology plays an important role in today's society, in veterinary medicine, in dentistry and in various medical specialties including oncology.
But as a radiologist, some things are worrying me.
One concern is the environmental impact caused by the accumulation of tons of toxic waste from X-ray films.
A majority of X-ray films are in the possession of patients and are inappropriately disposed into the environment.
These films take many years to degrade, leading to waste that can contaminate the soil and groundwater for hundreds of years and subsequently make their way to plants, animals, and the entire food chain.
This cumulative effect is harmful for humans because it can increase the risk for serious illnesses, including cancer.
In this new "Digital Age”, we must be advocates in the campaign for "Clean Radiology”, to be “Eco-Friendly".
We can require all medical, dental, and veterinary radiology clinics to replace X-ray films by printing on recyclable paper.
These clinics could also move towards implementing computer image transmission systems so that in the future there won't be a need to print at all.
It is necessary to reduce or even eliminate the use of X-ray films to promote sustainable development in Brazil and around the world!
The move towards sustainability depends on YOUR actions! Spread the word! You can become the voice for “Eco-Radiology" (#EcoRad)!
This is our project "Radiology without Borders”. I believe in #EcoRad. Do you?
